The treatment of steel by immersion in a special acid solution in order to remove ‘millscale’.  Alternatively, a method of removing varnish or varnished wallpaper with a strong alkaline solution.  Hence any alkaline cleaning may be referred to as ‘pickling’.
The term is sometimes used to describe a whitewashed paint finish.
